You don't have to identify as 'Progressive' to join the Progressive Idaho Discord. We welcome all who share our values of equality, inclusion, and commitment to building a better Idaho. We understand labels don't always fit everyone perfectly—what matters is creating a supportive community for positive change. We aim to 'connect the dots' and build a stronger community of people who want to make a difference, however you describe your political outlook.

Getting Started: Your Guide to Our Community

We would love to have you join the Progressive Idaho Discord! Whether you’re new to Discord or simply exploring a new community, this guide will help you navigate and make the most of your time here.

Our Mission

Progressive Idaho is dedicated to open-minded discussion, community-building, and collective action. We maintain a welcoming environment where members can share ideas, support one another, and spark meaningful change throughout Idaho and beyond. We believe that collaboration, empathy, and mutual respect are essential in driving real progress.

First Steps on Discord

New to Discord? Don’t worry! Discord is a communication platform that enables chatting through text, voice, and video. It’s organized into “servers” (like ours), each containing multiple “channels” dedicated to various topics.

If you ever get stuck, feel free to post questions in the #general channel, where moderators or other community members can assist you.

Joining Our Community

You will need the invite link, you can find it at the bottom of this page, or a recent post on our Bluesky account, if the invite doesn't work for you, please Contact us. Once you click the invite, Discord will ask you to sign in or create an account. After that, you'll be asked what additional hobbies/interest channels you want to be included in, and then it'll ask you what region you are in – this is a new feature and we hope to roll out region-specific features soon.

You may see an "application to join" our community before being able to sign up. This is done occasionally to prevent spam, if you get this message, answer the two basic questions (just helps us know you're human) and a moderator will approve you as soon as possible.

Channel Guide

Once you're in the group, you'll have access to most channels, the left sidebar will have the primary channels:

#general – For most relevant conversations and discussions concerning our mission. If you're not sure where your post goes, it goes here.
#random – (almost) anything goes.
#politics – Stay informed and discuss the latest political news and topics
#resist – Coordinate and discuss progressive actions, protests, and other forms of civic engagement.
#meetup - Want to plan a meetup? Start here.

We also have several hobby and interest-based channels, if you joined after March 1, 2025, you will see channels related to the interests and hobbies you chose when you joined. You can always change which channels you see by clicking "Channels and Roles" at the top of the channel list/sidebar.

Verification for Additional Channels (Suggested)

Verification is not mandatory, but completing it grants you access to more specific spaces:

Verified-Only – Dive deeper into conversations that require added trust
#queer-in-idaho (DM @zebpalmer to join) – A verified & private channel for queer community members in Idaho

We highly suggest everyone complete verification, to do so, send a direct message to @zebpalmer and he'll discuss verification options, for most users it only takes a couple of minutes. Verification helps us ensure a trustworthy and supportive environment.

Managing Your Notifications

Are you getting too many notifications? Or too few, causing you to miss important conversations? You may want to customize discord notifications for a better experience:

Global Notification Settings:

Click on the server name "Progressive Idaho" at the top of the channel list
Select "Notification Settings" from the dropdown menu
Choose your preferred notification level:
- All Messages: You'll be notified about every message
- Only @mentions: You'll only be notified when someone mentions you or tags @everyone/@here
- Nothing: You won't receive any notifications from the server

Channel-Specific Notifications:

Right-click on any channel name
Select "Notification Settings"
You can set different notification preferences for each channel
- For example: You might want all notifications in #resist but only mentions in #random

Muting Channels:

To temporarily mute a busy channel, right-click on the channel name and select "Mute Channel"
Choose a duration or mute until you turn it back on

These settings help you stay connected to discussions that matter to you without being overwhelmed.

Code of Conduct

Please refer to the #rules channel for our code of conduct. If you notice or experience concerning behavior, don’t hesitate to message/tag @moderators or send a direct message to @zebpalmer. Our goal is to foster a safe and inclusive atmosphere.
